Capping Failure Investigation

Capping Failure Investigation

GKL Group was engaged by Townsville City Council to investigate defects identified in the newly completed capping works at Jensen Landfill.

Applying an international building-defect pathology framework, we undertook a structured root-cause analysis examining design intent, construction sequencing, material performance, drainage behaviour and environmental loading. Our methodology focuses on causation and likely impact, assessing whether the defect mechanisms originated from construction practices, design assumptions or material characteristics.

The assessment drew on a detailed review of drawings, QA records, RFIs, NCRs, survey data and photographic evidence, cross-referenced against as-constructed conditions. This evidence base gave Council a clear understanding of the defect origins and established the foundation for a targeted remediation strategy to restore long-term capping stability and performance.

The findings were then used to support the development of a collaborative, risk-based remediation strategy, keeping the focus on the best long-term outcome for the asset rather than the attribution of liability.

This engagement reflects the analytical rigour, technical judgement and impartial approach that GKL Group brings to complex investigation and advisory work.
