Port of Townsville - East Port Development

GKL Group was engaged to provide Project Management services to Port of Townsville Limited for the delivery of the Benwell Road Intersection, East Port Connection Road and Windfarm Laydown Area projects. These works formed part of the broader East Port Development, supporting the Port's operational growth and capacity to handle heavy cargo.

Our role spanned the full project lifecycle, from early-stage design development and cost estimation through to construction supervision and final delivery over a 2.5 year period. Design was developed in close consultation with the Port, key stakeholders and future potential Port customers, ensuring the road and laydown infrastructure was fit for purpose and capable of accommodating long-load transport and heavy point load machinery.

Construction works included lightly bound and unbound granular pavements, asphalt and seal works, earthworks, treatment of unsuitable materials across reclaimed land, services installation and relocation, drainage works and fencing. The project site presented significant ground condition challenges due to existing dredge ponds and silty soils, requiring close collaboration between the project team and designers to develop a pavement solution that met the operational demands of end users.

Despite the complexity of the project and the challenges encountered along the way, the East Port Development was delivered on time and under budget. This outcome reflects the capability, experience and steady approach that GKL Group brought to every stage of the work.
